How to Extend the Service Life of a Bucket Tooth?

1. Optimizing Product Design
Selecting the right tooth design can significantly improve longevity. For example, Caterpillar's J-series teeth, BYG's Futura series (developed by the Spanish company), and ESCO's MaxDRP series (from the U.S.) all feature enhanced shapes that extend service life. Refer to the diagram below for a comparison of the same tooth model before and after redesign.  

Both BYG and ESCO have patented their designs, so despite being manufactured in China, these premium products are priced several times higher than standard versions. Chinese manufacturers in the aftermarket have also adopted similar approaches—reinforcing teeth with added weight and thickness for wear resistance—though they lack dedicated branded series. This makes them a cost-effective alternative.  

2. Material Enhancements
Improving material composition is a straightforward and effective method. Increasing elements such as Ni, Cr, Mo, and rare earth metals can quickly boost performance and lifespan.  

3. Surface Coatings
Applying wear-resistant coatings is another proven solution. Options include:  
- Standard hardfacing with wear-resistant welding wire,  
- Tungsten carbide overlay welding,  
- Tungsten carbide plate inserts.  
All these methods effectively prolong service life.
